1959 Cadillac

Classic Cars The leading source for self 1959 Cadillac. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

The 1959 Cadillac was a car that practically had it all: performance, comfort, and best of all it was a great looking automobile. The Cadillac was a symbol of success and to own one of these babies meant you "had arrived". With their flamboyantly high tailfins and jet pod taillights, you either fell in love with this car or you hated it. To describe any car in a single word is difficult but for the 1959 Cadillac, one word definitely comes to mind - excellence.

Monster Tailfins and Chrome Grille Teeth

Besides the style and glitz of the "monster" tailfins, the grille work in the front of the 1959 Cadillac was a glittering eye-catching set of chrome teeth. As if that wasn't enough grille, even the rear sported a smaller toothy chrome grille. You could also describe the 1959 Cadillac with the word "massive". The new front bumper on the 1959 Cadillac was massive. It probably had to be since it housed the parking and turn signal lights as a pair in pods on its outer ends. The Cadillac also had a new rear bumper and like the front, it too was massive. The rear bumper had chrome outer pods which housed the backup lights.

Everything Falls Into Place

For the 1959 Cadillac, everything seemed to fall into place. In 1959, General Motors was working to produce all-new vehicles. This meant a major re-design effort for the 1959 Cadillac.

Second, although a lesser known fact, the 1959 Cadillac's design revolved around a Buick door. As this was the case, the Buick's door had a taper which dictated the Cadillac's rearward taper.

Finally, the head of design at Cadillac, Ed Glowacke, wanted the 1959 Cadillac to have a new design that was innovative and state-of-the-art. The work to design the 1959 Cadillac officially began in mid-1956.

We all know about the distinctive tailfins. To make the car look more expensive, twin taillights were added. The 1959 Cadillac also had a very striking feeling of openness about it. This is because 1959 was a "greenhouse year" for GM and their full lineup of cars boasted a number of visibility compliments. When sitting in a '59 Cadillac, a driver could enjoy an unobstructed view in all directions. Buyers also had the ability to choose from two roof designs; a traditional curved roof or a "blade-upper" flat roof that was more radical in design. Either would create a fully lavish and open view.

Other notables about the 1959 Cadillac include:

? Cadillac shared parts from other GM cars (mainly structural pieces hidden from view)
? The windshield was extremely curved (caused GM to rethink the placement of controls and switches)
? Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes were standard
? The '59 Cadillac came with many options: cruise control, air suspension, electric door locks, and a power trunk are a few.

The 1959 Cadillac, also known as a '59 Caddy, was 225 inches from bumper to bumper and had a wheelbase that was 130 inches. The 1959 Cadillac also used the exceptionally strong tubular-center X-frame which allowed the vehicle to sit lower which improved its handling and its appearance. The '59 Caddy's engine was a 390 cid V-8 that produced 325 horsepower and it was equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts.

In 1959, Cadillac had six series available:

Series 6200

6300 (DeVille)

6400 Eldorados

6900 Eldorados

Sixty Special Fleetwood

6700 Fleetwood 7

The 1959 Cadillac is a classic and today it is a highly appreciated and sought-after car. No other vehicle design better characterizes the auto industry during the late 1950's than the flamboyant 1959 Cadillac.

Cruising Around Town With the Top Down

Classic Cars The leading source for self Cruising Around Town With the Top Down. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

The Northern Girls may knock me out, but put me out West or down South so I can cruise around all year round with the top down! There is nothing better than a convertible! Classic, Muscle Car, Sports Car, or Luxury Car - it ALL works!!!

Driving around with the wind blowing in your face, in your hair, in the open air, what a great feeling! Takes me back to my younger days, cruising down to Santa Cruz, with the boards in the back, looking cool and ready for action ( in our own minds anyway! ). Partial to Pontiacs, I love the GTO and Firebird Converts the best. Although, put a rag top on a Chevy, be it a Vette, Camaro, Chevelle, Classic Impala, or Monte Carlo, and it works good too! And of course, we can't overlook the classic 55-57 T-Birds! I suppose we need to include the older classic roadsters, many which came with NO top, they were just open!

I've seen some slick new convertibles out lately, like the Eos by Volkswagen. Have you seen one? It's what they call a hardtop convertible, where the hard top goes down into the trunk. It is super quick at it, too, taking all of about 25 seconds. The Eos also comes with a sunroof for those days when you don't need the whole top open. Pretty sweet! Reminds me of the Ford Fairlane Skyliners, which were only available from 1957 thru 1959. A classic beast of a car, and a pretty slow crank down, but then - it was the 50's!!! The top, once down, took up the whole trunk, with all the mechanics for it. But it still looked cool, and you had the best of both worlds - hard top and no top!!

Shopping around the aftermarket auto web stores, it's nice to see you can now get a good quality replacement convertible top for just about any older convert. It doesn't seem that long ago that the best you might do was a shabby, one-size-fits-all jobber that likely only came in an ugly white or cream color, or black. Depending on your car color, it probably looked bad. And, it probably leaked, and never folded up worth a hoot. The windows in 'em were always fun too. Extra points if you could actually SEE out of it, they were a nightmare when folding up the top, and cracked easily.

So, whatever your car choice is, if you can get it with a rag top, by all means go for it! Even if you live in the Midwest and have to sit in it in the garage 6 months out of the year!! Long live the Summer!

1956 Mercury Montclair

Classic Cars The leading source for self 1956 Mercury Montclair. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

The Mercury Montclair, a full sized automobile, was available as a two door hardtop, convertible and phaeton four door hardtop sedans. It had a length of 206.3 inches, a wheelbase of 119 inches and it weighed anywhere from 3,490 pounds to 3,725 pounds. It could be purchased brand new for between $2,600 and $2,900 depending on what options the buyer was interested in.

A Premium Automobile

Introduced by the Mercury Division of the Ford Motor Company in 1955, the Mercury Montclair was advertised as part of Mercury's premium automobile line. Ford historians aren't fully sure where the moniker, Montclair, came from but the general consensus is it is taken from an upper class community of Montclair, New Jersey. The 1956 Montclair was manufactured with some of Mercury's best features which included dual chrome outside rear view mirrors, a dual exhaust, fender skirts and extra chrome trim. It also had various two tone paint combinations. This was probably the best noted feature of the Montclair because the use of contrasting color panels, which ran under the side windows, set the Mercury Montclair apart from their other vehicle lines.

Sleek and Powerful

The 1956 Mercury Montclair included all of Mercury's evolutionary engineering. The '56 Mercury Montclair included factory air, which was a new option in Mercury vehicles as of 1955. The '56 Montclair also offered an "on-demand" low-gear kickdown for an extra cost with Mercury's three speed "Merc-O-Matic" automatic transmission. The "Merc-O-Matic" was actually Ford's first automatic transmission, which was introduced in 1950. In general the transmissions were given the name Ford-O-Matic but when a Mercury vehicles was marketed, it was given the moniker Merc-O-Matic.

The 1956 Mercury Montclair was no slouch when it came to power. It had a large V-8 engine with plenty of horsepower: There were two options available for the 1956 Mercury Montclair:

225hp 312 c.i. V-8335hp 312 c.i. V-8 with a 4 barrel carburetor

In terms of what type of Mercury Montclair was produced in 1956, here is the actual production breakdown:

Convertible: 7,762 Hardtop Sport Coupe: 50,562, Phaeton Hardtop Sedan: 23,493

The hardtop sport coupes were produced the most while the convertibles were fairly limited in production in 1956.

Since the Montclair was a premium Mercury vehicle, the interior would have sported upholstery that was comprised of leather and vinyl.

A Real Collector Car

Overall, the 1956 Mercury Montclair was a car with burly good looks with a bit of flash. It had a V-8 engine that was modern for the time and powerful. It has been a somewhat under appreciated model, so it can be hard to find the '56 Mercury Montclair as they are fairly scarce. This has made it a real collector car with a rapidly rising collector value. You have to be careful though, if you are looking to find one of these and restore it, as the parts can be as difficult to find as the cars themselves.

BMW Car

Classic Cars The leading source for self BMW Car. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

Bavarian Motor Works, is a manufacturing company that makes motorcycles, OEM BMW Rims, & even engines for the BMW cars that you see on the street. It's main plant is in Germany & it was founded in 1916; which is not too long ago compared to other luxury brands. BMW even owns & manufactures the Mini brand, and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Cars. BMW makes motorcycles under BMW Motorrad & Husqvarna brands - I know they're weird names, but you have to remember that they are in Germany. BMW's & Factory Original BMW Wheels are widely known for their luxury & the great way that they perform.

After the first World War, which was World War I.. if you didn't know, BMW was mandated to stop making engines for airplanes by the terms of the Versailles Armistice Treaty. Because of this unexpected halt that they had to go by, the company moved to producing motorcycles in 1923 once the restrictions of the treaty were slowly but surely starting to be lifted. After making motorcycles, they began to make cars & Original BMW Rims in 1928 & 1929.

The little blue, white, circular logo is supposed to illustrate or represent the movement of a propeller, to show that the white blades are cutting through the beautiful blue sky. I can honestly say that I had no idea; my Mom has a BMW with Factory BMW Rims & I had no idea what it meant. I just thought they liked those colors & it was the ones that looked best with the car - oh well.

After BMW made their first aircraft & it was successful because of its high-altitude performance, they started making engines for World War II aircrafts. When 1959 rolled in, the automotive division in the BMW company started having financial troubles. After it did enough damage, the shareholders had a meeting to decide whether they were going to work with it & through it or just give up on it. As you can obviously tell, they decided to just work through it & just try to cash in on the, at the time, economic car boom that was enjoyed by so many manufacturers & people. They eventually bought the right to make & sell the Italian Iso Isetta. After this was done, it helped the company get back on their feet & gave them what they needed to move forward & make their cars & Factory Original BMW Wheels.

In 1992, BMW came up on a large wager in California; it was based on industrial design studio DesignworksUSA - which they just so happen to fully acquire in the year of 1995. The year before that, 1994, BMW had bought the Rover Group & owned it for six years. The Rover Group included the Rover, Land Rover, & even the MG brands. By 2000, they weren't doing so well so BMW decided to sell the brands to Phoenix Consortium, they eventually formed MG Rover. At this time, BMW still had the rights to manufacture the new MINI model, which was launched in the year of 2001.

In February of last year (2009), the chief designer - Chris Bangle - stated that he was leaving BMW after being on the design team for seventeen years. He was replaced by a man named Adrian van Hooydonk, who was initially, Bangle's right hand man. Bangle was widely known for all of the radical designs he had produced with BMW including the 7-Series & even the 2002 BMW Z4 with Factory Original 2002 BMW Z4 Rims. Let's just hope that this new guy is doing a great job like Chris Bangle.

Classic Cars The leading source for self The Benefit of a Car Cover: Shielding Your Car From the Sun - Choosing the Right Material for You. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

Uv rays are harmful for everyone, including cars. The sun's rays bleach the exterior finish of the vehicle, and the paintwork becomes faded away. The looks old way before it's time. In addition when the vehicle is left standing in the sun for long periods of time, then it starts to get stuffy and overheated. This is more than just unbearable to drive. The internals specs of the paint too get ruined in the heat. So all in all, when a paint is left out in the sun, all that remains is an unhappy car and driver.

This is where the Sunbrella auto covers from Covercraft come in. Covercraft is a world famous company that manufactures superb coverings. The company is known to have a wide choice so that everyone, no matter what car, what weather or climate, has auto car covers to suit their particular needs. This is accentuated by the fact that they offer custom auto covers. Car owners can personalise their cover to their exact specifications.

The Sunbrella is perfect for anyone who lives in a mostly hot climate with the occasional rainfall. The acrylic fibres used in the manufacturing of Sunbrella is naturally UV rays resistant. This is the best offer of protection for the car. When auto car covers are naturally resistant, and don't need any treatment to reach this level of resistance, they are much more durable. The treatment will not fade with time and therefore the auto car covers will be long lasting.

The acrylic material of Sunbrella car covers is also resistant to the growth of mildew and or rot. Bird droppings, tree sap and the like, will be unable to penetrate through the auto car covers, and the car will remain stain free. It also prevents any dust from finding its way onto the car, ensuring that the car remain totally clean and spotless.

In the event of the occasional rainfall, the Sunbrella is also water resistant and made of scratch free material. This is albeit at a much lower level, but is sufficient enough for the odd shower or two. However, it will prove to be inadequate for a downpour.

Covercraft offers the Sunbrella auto covers in five handsome colors; Pacific Blue, Sky Blue, Cadet Grey, Jet Black or Toast. This means that even when the car is covered, it remains good looking and classy, just like the car hidden beneath it. Did you know seat covers are also made from this material?

Building Your Rat Rod - Some Crazy, Custom Ideas

Classic Cars The leading source for self Building Your Rat Rod - Some Crazy, Custom Ideas. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

Now that you have your Rat Rod, you want some ideas to set you apart from everyone else. Not just different paint schemes or wheel types. Lets go a bit more in depth in the custom areas.

Airbags - There are many myths to airbags. Too expensive, too much work to put them in, etc. The truth and reality of them is that they have come down in price considerably, and although there is some thought involved, installation is not that bad. Most Rat Rods have straight front axles, so you should leave them be, but the rear ends can be easily changed even if they have leaf or coil springs. You need to make sure that you have at least four links to the rear of your Rat Rod to keep it centered in the wheel well area. And for the most part, the airbag sits in the coil spring perch. Or you have a leaf spring rear, you can easily add one. Plumbing is straightforward. At least if can lower the rear of your Rat Rod and not the front, it will make a tremendous difference in ride and especially stance. Nothing looks better than a parked Rat Rod with it's rear sitting on the ground. Very Cool!

Flames - You've seen them done many times, but what's the right way to do them? You can go easy and weld in a spark plug in your exhaust of your Rat Rod, pump the pedal before you start, almost flooding the motor and then spark it up, wham...big flame, but temporary. Going the propane route, you can run a line into your exhaust and crack open the bottle to control your amount of flame. Be sure to use your brain as your are involving flammables with more flammables. Don't blow up your ride!

Chopping - Roof chops is what makes a Rat Rod. Chopping them off completely is easy. Chopping and taking a couple of inches out involves some thought, and should be done by someone with some metal experience, not to mention you need to know how to weld! Depending on how much you chop out, you will lose visibility, and that in turn means drive-ability. If you are building a Rat Rod to do some bar hopping, then it really doesn't matter. But if your intentions are to do a couple hundred miles a weekend, then strongly consider mild chops.

Take the ideas and run with them. And remember, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Let your imagination determine how cool your Rat Rod really can be.

Epoxy and the Automobile Industry

Classic Cars The leading source for self Epoxy and the Automobile Industry. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

Various polymers are utilized in manufacture of automobiles. A polymer is a large molecule made by linking together repeating units called monomers. Once these monomers are linked together or cured the material produced has various properties which are vital to the building of the cars we drive. These include excellent thermal resistance, good chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, high mechanical strength, good heat transfer properties and excellent stiffness.

Some of the specific polymers used in the assembly of motor vehicles include silicone, urethane, polyester and epoxy which are designed for applications ranging from the painting on the outside of the car, to forming the material used make the bumper, to bonding the wire to the PCB board which form many of the control electronics.

All of these polymers share the characteristic of enabling technology. The inside of an automobile is a very demanding environment. A material that has high a level of reliability is required to function under conditions of heat, extreme cold, wetness, high humidity, etc.

Epoxies, in particular, have played a role due to its high chemical and heat resistance. There are many uses for epoxy in the assembly of an automobile. For instance, Epoxy is used in many of the motors used to support functions such as rolling up your car window and circulating coolant on your air conditioning system. In this case of a motor, epoxy performs the function of bonding the magnet to the commutator within the motor. In other functions it is used in wire harnesses to protect wiring in the harsh automobile environment, in another example with compressors to adhere the wiring in the clutch, just to name a few.

Due to the gas crisis and a new desire to leave a more environmental footprint the automotive industry as a whole is moving away from gasoline power vehicles to alternative energy vehicles power by electricity, fuel cells, and ethanol.

The usefulness of epoxy is still clear in light of the change in automobile due to its flexibility. By adjusting the some of the ingredients epoxy can be formulated with customized properties which can be catered to any specific automotive application.Examples of these applications include potting for Flex Fuel sensor due to resistance to ethanol environment and Lithium ion battery packs due to its ability to adhere in alkaline/acidic environments.

The future is guaranteed to bring changes in customer requirements which will spur changes in technology. Participants in the industry will need to ensure their product offering meet the changing requirements of their customers. Epoxy will continue to play large role in the automotive industry due to its versatility.

Building A Rat Rod - What Tools You Will Need To Get The Job Done

Classic Cars The leading source for self Building A Rat Rod - What Tools You Will Need To Get The Job Done. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

Your staring at your new Rat Rod project and are contemplating where to start. The question you should be asking yourself is do I have the tools to get the job done? Here's a brief outline of what you will need to complete most builds.

A basic set of hand tools is essential to doing anything on your Rat Rod, so if you don't have any, you at least need a set of wrenches and sockets. 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" drives and american sizes are sufficient enough. It's nice to have metric tools, but most of the older cars are american only. A good set of screwdrivers and a couple different hammers will help.

Every good Rat Rod build will most likely require some welding. Cutting and welding after all, it what makes these vehicles "custom." A small 110V welder is great for sheetmetal and some frame repairs. A 220V is better for heavier gauge metal, but is often larger and more expensive. For cutting, cut off tools, sawzalls, air saws, or even grinders with cut off discs. The greatest thing would be to have a plasma cutter, but they do not come too cheap, but if you have lots of cutting to do, it's not the wrong thing to do to ask and borrow one.

An air compressor is necessary to paint, run air tools, and even blow the dust off of a job. The bigger the better, but the price will obviously determine how big you want to go. If possible, locate it in another room so not to drive yourself crazy with the noise. Be sure to have a tank large enough to run a dual action sander. They consume a lot of air and in order for you to work steadily on your Rat Rod, you need to be able to store air.

Paint guns start at $50 and go up to $600. A decent gun can run about $200. Be careful where you spray as fumes and neighbors can cause problems. The optimum thing would be to rent a spray booth. This way you can see what you are painting, and keep the piece with the neighborhood while building your Rat Rod.

What we are trying to say here is that to do most of the work on your Rat Rod, some tools are necessary. Other specialty tools are optional and in time, you will find yourself making you own specialty tools to get the job done.

Ford Mustang - The First Generation Models for Your Restoration Project

Classic Cars The leading source for self Ford Mustang - The First Generation Models for Your Restoration Project. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

1964 was the banner year that Ford Motors unveiled a new breed of car at the World's Fair in New York. With the belief that a small sports car would be the next hot ticket, Ford made strides to make it one of their automobiles. Understanding that true success would come with volume sales, a two-seat design was dropped and Ford introduced the 1965 Mustang based on the Falcon with numerous options to give buyers the opportunity to customize their purchase. At the base price of $2,320, the Mustang racked up over 22,000 in sales its first day, 417,000 in the first year and surpassed the one million mark in March of 1966. The attention was now on the pony car, and is the only class of muscle car that still exists today. The Ford Mustang is the only original pony car to remain in uninterrupted production.

1964?-1965

The first Mustang model, the early 65 or 64?, available as a coupe or convertible, featured a base 170 cubic inch six-cylinder engine with a three-speed floor shift transmission. Optionally a 260 cubic inch V-8 engine in addition to a four-speed manual transmission or three-speed automatic Cruise-O-Matic transmission was available. 1965 was also the debut of the Shelby GT350 Street, a high-performance Fastback 2x2 Mustang, featuring a modified K-code 289cid V8 engine with 306 hp. Engine replacements were made and are often referred to as late 1965 models, switching out the 170 cubic inch with a 200 cubic inch version with increased horsepower. The 260 cubic inch was replaced with a 289 cubic inch with 200 hp, with an optional four-barrel solid-lifter which produced 225 hp, or the "Hi-Po" which generated 271 hp.

Identifying an Early 1965 Mustang

An Early 1965 Mustang, or 1964? to enthusiasts, was built between March 9th and July 31st 1964. Identifying features are a factory-equipped generator starting system and a generator charge light (later 65 models used 'Alt' light), a 170 ci V6 (U-code), a 260 V8 (F-code), or a 289 V8 (D-code) engine, large horns mounted on the frame behind the radiator, a brake light pressure switch on the master cylinder, a two-speed heater with center 'off' switch, and the front hood features angled edges that are not folded which were modified in the later 1965 models to a rolled front edge. Another difference is that the passenger seat in the early 1965 models was in a fixed position.

1966-1968

Slight moderate changes to the 1966 Mustang were to the grille and wheel covers, along with a new instrument cluster and revised side scoops featuring chrome trim and three wind-splits. 1966 was also the year that the millionth Mustang was sold. Changes to the 1967 Mustang were major going for a more muscular and aggressive look and feel. Changes include a full Fastback roofline, longer nose, triple tail lamps, a wider chassis and bigger grille. The release of the Shelby GT500 with a 428 cubic inch V-8 with 355 hp was also in 1967. 1967 was also the last year the Ford block letting appeared across the front edge of first generation Mustangs (The lettering was re-added in 1974). 1968 saw the release of the 302 cubic inch V-8 engine to replace the older "Hi-Po", with a mid-year release of the 427 cubic inch engine, along with the 428 Cobra Jet engine aimed at racing enthusiasts. Front and back side markers and shoulder belts were also added to the 1968 model in accordance with Federal regulations, and this was the first year that the rear view mirror attached to the windshield instead of the frame.

1969

Body style changes in 1969 included a longer body for a more aggressive muscle car appearance. The title Fastback was dropped and Sportsroof was adopted. A new 302 cubic inch engine with more than 220 hp was released, and a 351 cubic inch Windsor generating 250 hp with a two-barrel carburetor or 290 hp with a four-barrel. Special-Edition Mustangs available in 1969 were the Boss 302, 429, Shelby GT350, GT500 and the Mach 1, all with performance engines.

1970-1973

Changes to the 1970 Mustang were minimal with only the addition of a ram air Shaker hood scoop. The 1971 model was a foot longer than earlier Mustangs making this the biggest Mustang and heaviest by 600 pounds. The Mach 1 was the only special edition Mustang to make the cut and remain in the line-up. 1972 saw no changes to the body style, while the Sprint model, featuring red, white, and blue exterior paint and tape styling was released. In 1973, the fuel shortage and newly introduced emissions standards brought an end to the muscle car era, designers moved away from the Falcon platform and discontinued the convertible.

This is seen as the end of the first generation Mustangs and what are now referred to as Classic Mustangs.

How To Build Your Rat Rod Your Way

Classic Cars The leading source for self How To Build Your Rat Rod Your Way. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

So you have seen hundreds, even thousands of pictures of Rat Rods and you have had enough of ideas and you decide to build what you want in a Rat Rod. Here's a couple of ways to get some ideas flowing for your Rat Rod.

Everybody seems to have the idea of flat black and steel wheels with baby moon hubcaps. There is nothing wrong with going with a flat metallic silver or a flat metallic maroon. Using full moon hubcaps give it the "salt flats" look, and actually makes it look a bit sleeker, without taking away the Rat Rod look.

Engines and Transmissions are readily available. If you want to be able to drive your Rat Rod year round, there is nothing wrong with aftermarket fuel injection. Just disguise it a bit so the wiring is not so obvious. Use some metal conduit or other sheathing to run wires through. Hide computers and electronics under the dash. Electronic transmissions are not readily spotted as they sit under your ride.

Interiors are always another topic for argument. Most Rat Rods have no interior and have the most basic "boat" type of seat. There is nothing wrong will a full interior, just keep it relevant. I would not have a rolled and pleated interior with bright vibrant colors. Mexican ponchos are great to wrap around or even to glue to existing interior parts. The fit the bill perfectly for your Rat Rod.

Add-ons and customization is where many people's opinions are different. Swapping out dashboards from other year vehicles is cool, but some want to keep their Chevy all Chevy. This is a matter of personal opinion. Same goes with headlights and taillights. Fenders and body work is best swapped with similar years as putting a fifties fender on a thirties car would look a bit funny. Use common sense here. Just because it looks old and ratty doesn't make it a true Rat Rod.

Windshields and roofs are a matter of driveability as well. Local bar hopping is ok if you chop the roof and windshield. Only the die hard Rat Rodders drive them state to state. Removable hard tops are optimum, but some experience is necessary to cut off a roof and make it bolt-able. It's not too hard, but you should have knowledge of welding and metal fabrication.

What all this means is that variety is the way to go when building your Rat Rod. Take note of what people say, but you determine what the final outcome of your ride will be.

Buy Vintage VW Parts That Are Available - Some Require Repair

Classic Cars The leading source for self Buy Vintage VW Parts That Are Available - Some Require Repair. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

Anyone who has repaired and or restored Vintage VW Beetles and Karmin Ghias, knows that they disassemble easily. The "peoples car" was designed for easy repair and restoration. The car can be disassembled down to it's chassis fairly easily. If the goal is to restore the car to original or better condition, your restorer will have to deal with some rust. The most typical problem areas are the galleys that channel heat from the heat exchangers into the cab and onto the windshield to defrost and defog during bad weather.

The galleys are problematic because they are the only source of heat, and windshield protection. If the galleys are perforated from rust and corrosion, the holes will bleed off the warm air being blown into the car from the engine. They are also difficult to access, unless you remove the floor panels. Attributable to the thoughtful design of vintage VW parts, the floor boards are separate removable parts. If the galleys of your car are rusted through, it is likely the floor boards are perforated as well, and should be replaced. Once they are removed, access to the interior side of the heat galleys, is more convenient. The repair is truly dependent upon your goals for the car. If you are restoring to show quality, you will need to repair metal with metal by cutting out the corroded sections, and welding into place new metal. If you are looking for a quick less involved repair, fiber glass can be a good solution for repairing holes in the galleys, since they will not be particularly visible.

If you decide to replace corroded metal with clean metal, be aware that the welding process will expose metal to accelerated rusting, if rust protection is not applied. There are several methods for applying rust protection, and it is important to remember that the galleys will be passively transporting heat into the car so it is important to rust proof with compounds that will not contribute chemicals, and odors into the air stream.

Spray application using a wand will effectively manage rust protection. There are products now available that are non toxic but very effective at stopping and preventing rust. Coating the complete interior surface of the galleys is a good idea because the continual hot, cold environment of the galley interior is a rust haven.

Short driving trips can pump warm air into very cool galleys causing condensation. Unless the galleys reach full operating temperature they will condense moisture on the inside, especially in winter. The nature of the heating system, deriving the heat energy from exhaust heat exchangers having air forced over the cooling fins to first cool the exhaust manifolds, and secondarily heat the interior, and defrost the windshield, makes condensation inside the galleys impossible to prevent during cold weather and short trips. Therefore it is critical that rust prevention inside the repaired galleys be effective.

Basic Engine Teardown Prep For Restoring Classic Cars

Classic Cars The leading source for self Basic Engine Teardown Prep For Restoring Classic Cars. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

Rebuilding and restoring a classic car engine while providing personal satisfaction will undoubtedly take up a great deal of your time. For that reason alone it's important that you do as much preparation work as possible before tacking the "easy" part of disassembling it. Keep in mind that specific engine removal procedures are not the same for all cars and if in doubt don't hesitate to pick up the service manual for your specific make an model.

Engines from the classic cars of yesterday consist of many fewer components than even the simplest of today's engines. Even so, this doesn't diminish the importance of taking great care when disassembling a class auto engine. Before beginning, video tape or take pictures of the engine and all components connected to it from every angle. And document anything about the engine that is unusual. Remember that at the beginning you will not know exactly how well the restoration project will go. You may have the engine in pieces for day, weeks, or even months. It's very easy to forget where certain components of the car came from. And there's nothing more frustrating than having one or more parts left over when the re-assembling is complete.

Don't throw any original part out - even if you have a replacement part for it. Save them all in a box until the engine has been reassembled and is running. Label parts as you remove them to avoid confusing similar looking components. You can use tags to label them or if the part is not an internal engine component, you can inscribe them with identifying marks.

Before you begin make sure you have adequate eye protection. Also, you'll probably find that wearing a pair of mechanics gloves will help to save your knuckles. Also, make sure that the engine is cold. Also, in some cases you may have to remove the car hood in order to get enough clearance to remove the larger parts of the engine.

When disassembling the engine you don't want to damage any of the components connected to the engine. So begin by removing all accessories from the engine block and head starting with the exhaust and intake manifolds. Now you can begin to disassemble the engine block. The important thing during this stage is to not force anything unless absolutely necessary. Using brute force on any part of an engine will do more harm than good. If studs have rusted try using a rust penetrating lubricant before attempting more drastic measures.

If the penetrating lubricant does not work, try a stud remover. Tap the head GENTLY but Again, don't force them. It can't be stressed enough that you should be as gentle with the stud as humanly possible. As a last resort, if the stud still cannot be removed, you may have to find someone familiar with arc welding techniques which can be used to remove studs.

As part of your tagging, number all of the piston tops, connecting rods, rod bearing caps, and other components that come in multiples. Tag other components such as the valve lifters, push rods, and valves as to their position.

If you properly do the auto disassembly prep work before beginning your engine restoration, you have just made your restoration job immensely easier.

Jaguar XK120 - What Was It Like

Classic Cars The leading source for self Jaguar XK120 - What Was It Like. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

It's 1968, My older brother leaves for Sacremento State College in the ex-family 1957 Desoto which he purchased from my parents for $150.

He gets settled in his dorm and his classes. He starts looking at the classified ads (we were raised on classified ads). He gets excited about a Jag XK120 ad because a good friend of our Dad's brought one by the house a year before - he was selling it for a friend, and we all were transfixed by the car.

My brother makes a deal with the owner and trades the Desoto for the 120. We get "word" in the bi-weekly phone call about this sports car Craig got for the Desoto.

Summer is coming. Craig has made friends with the man who runs the dorm. Craig will be his "Stand-in" and will run maintenance operations for him, for the summer. Craig sees an opportunity to help his 12 year-old bro (me). If I can find the money for the flight, he'll put me to work prepping the dorm units for paint.

I mow lawns. I get it together, and fly to SAC. Craig was going to pick me up in the Jag, but the week before he raced a 1968 Charger to SF to see my other brother in the Navy Brig! He had the carbs on the 120 too lean, and burned a piston at a constant 115 MPH - burned it right on through.

When I saw the 120 I fell in LOVE! The FIRST thing we did is get to work pulling the engine in the parking lot of the dorm. Craig arranged for a long block to be delivered. We changed the head - the 120 was an "S" and the long block had the mild head. As time dragged on past 9PM, I could not take it, and said good night.

At 7AM the next morning I scrambled out to the parking lot to see my brother working on the car. "What time did you get up", I asked. "I didn't go to bed", he said! We worked together and had the "blue bomb" running by noon.

I was NEVER as excited as when we pulled out into SAC traffic with no brakes! We were taking the ONLY transportation we had to go find brake parts! How did we stop? Well, the XK120 has a "fly-off" hand brake - it doesn't "set" until you push down on the top of it. My brother simply pulled hard on the long chrome lever to stop the 3600 pound, two seat "drop-top" giant piece of art!

Anyway, we got it fixed. We got the dorms painted and my dear bro paid me much more than my 12 year-old effort was worth! I flew home with a new LOVE in my heart - I had to find an XK120 of my own!

Do you want more XK120 stories? Let me know. I did own 5 before I was 20 - not to mention my E-Types.

Here's what to do next:

Bentleys - The World's Fastest Lorry

Classic Cars The leading source for self Bentleys - The World's Fastest Lorry. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

Bentleys have always had a reputation for being powerful cars, but as opposed to the Lamborghinis and Ferraris of this world they're also known for being reliable, durable and possessing an almost rugged look when compared to other top cars. They're not like the tiny, sleek, fragile Italian cars. They are beasts.

Because of this, they were referred to as "the world's fastest lorries" in the 1920s by Bugatti, who were their main competitors on the racing circuit at the time. Although Bentley have certainly come a long way and passed from one owner to another a few times, they've stuck by these design decisions to become the cars they are today.

After Volkswagen took over they dramatically increased and modernised the production of Bentleys, increasing the amount that were produced each year. Rather than harming Bentley's reputation as an exclusive car, the increased production brought them back into the eye of the public as one of the luxury car brands. They also became popular with footballers, driving them even further into the limelight. In fact, demand was so large that the Crewe-based factory couldn't keep up, and some of the work had to be moved to Germany temporarily.

Production of four seat convertible models also helped them further, keeping the Bentley image of durability but combining their reputation for making great larger cars with the fashionable convertible models that had proved so popular in recent years.

The manufacturer also presented Queen Elizabeth II with an official state limousine for her Golden Jubilee. The car is now used for official travel to engagements or meetings and to ferry her to and from church whilst she's staying in Balmoral Castle in Scotland or Sandringham House in Norfolk. There's also a special hood ornament which depicts St George slaying the dragon that replaces the flying B seen on other Bentleys whilst the Queen is on board.

Through investment, increasing production and gaining attention through acts like creating a state limousine, Bentley have managed to storm back onto the front line of luxury automobiles in the last decade and have created a wide range of quality cars since then. By recognising what made them popular in the first place and capitalising on that in an age of small, sleek cars, they've really come back to the forecourt.

The Burning Volkswagen Kombi - A Fiery Problem For A Classic Van

Classic Cars The leading source for self The Burning Volkswagen Kombi - A Fiery Problem For A Classic Van. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

The air-cooled Volkswagen Kombi is an iconic vehicle that just oozes character. Kombis are practical too. You can drive them to work, carry the family around and go camping in them, and you still see them being used on a daily basis as well as being restored for occasional use. There are still plenty of young guys and girls who would like to own one as their daily driver.

Volkswagen kombis do have one disturbing fault though. They catch fire, and then it's goodbye Kombi.

So just why do they catch fire, and what can you do to stop yours burning?

I haven't found a definitive article in a VW magazine yet, but I've been driving my 1976 2 liter bay window as my daily driver for over 14 years, so I've taken an interest in the problem and learnt as much as I could. I'll answer the question as well as I can.

There are actually a few different things that can cause the Kombi to burn, but they all come back to fuel getting loose in the engine bay. Kombis have a fuel tank in front of and above the engine, a hose going down from that to the fuel pump, and another hose going up through the tinware to the carbies.

Kombis are old now, and they have a lot of age related problems unless they've been rebuilt. Even then, it's most likely not everything has been brought back to as new condition.

One of those old-age problems is perished and cracked fuel lines. Chances are yours have been replaced, but check them anyway. When they crack they can leak gas everywhere. One spark and your Kombi is history. Also, right below the engine are two hot heat exchangers that have the exhaust running through them. I don't know what causes the biggest problem, heat exchangers or sparks, but it's largely irrelevant when your van goes up in smoke.

So check those fuel lines, and if you buy a kombi don't drive it anywhere with old and cracked fuel lines. Replace them! And don't forget to check the hose from the fuel tank to the pump. It's out of the way and easily overlooked.

If you've undone the fuel hoses a few times, make sure you haven't cut through the hose with the edge of the hose clamp. It can happen, and then you have gas dripping down onto the engine.

The fuel hose runs through the tinware surrounding the engine. The tinware plays a very important role, it's essential for keeping your engine cool. It's nearly as important as the radiator on water cooled cars, so don't discard it. But do check where the fuel line runs through the tinware. There should be a rubber grommet protecting the fuel line from the tin. Mine eventually perished, and it was one of the few parts I couldn't buy new, so I wrapped the fuel line in a larger diameter piece of hose to stop the rubbing,

Another old-age problem is where the fuel lines go into the carbies. There is a brass inlet pipe that is part of the carburetor, and they come loose. You can imagine what happens. All of a sudden the gas that was going into the carby is spraying all over the engine. Goodbye Kombi!

I was very lucky. I was buying parts from a long-time VW mechanic, and he told me about that particular problem. I checked the inlet pipes not long after, and one of them actually pulled right out of the carby very easily. I put it back in with loctite and check both inlet pipes regularly. If yours are loose, check with your mechanic and get them fixed before you drive your van again.

My Kombi also had loose inlet and outlet pipes in the fuel pump. They got put back in with loctite, and they also get checked whenever I'm doing maintenance on the engine.

I've come across another problem too. There is a rubber elbow near the fuel filler. Mine perished, and I could smell gas, but couldn't find the leak. Eventually I found fuel dripping of the bottom of the Kombi below the filler. Needles to say that got replaced before I drove it again.

I'm not saying that I've listed everything that can make a Kombi burn, so if a vee-dubber tells you other causes, listen to them. And keep a good eye on your kombis fuel lines. If you smell gas find out where it is coming from and fix it. It must be very depressing sitting on the side of the road watching your beloved Kombi going up in smoke.

And it does happen. You'll read about burning Kombis in VW magazines and on forums, and I've heard of a couple of incidents personally. My wife was driving to work one day and up ahead was a column of smoke and the local fire crew. As she drove past she saw a kombi burning. The burnt out shell ended up in a holding yard near where I lived for a few weeks.

A couple of months later the attendant where I got gas told me about his Kombi. His wife was driving it, smelt gas and went into a gas station to get it checked. The mechanic couldn't see any leaks so she kept driving. The Kombi burst into flames and that was the end of it.

Don't let it happen to you.

Rat Rod Cars - What's Involved In Building One?

Classic Cars The leading source for self Rat Rod Cars - What's Involved In Building One?. Free self Automotive Classic Cars resources. Includes sites related to self Classic Cars you can access from here!

You've read all about them, and now your want to build your own. Rat Rods. Not necessarily something new, but a bit more desirable lately. We have a couple ideas for your Rat Rod build that won't break the bank.

Alright. Lets go with the ultra cheap angle for beginners. You can find a rusty, but not rotted out thirties or forties Rat Rod that doesn't run, but will with some minor tuning. Keep the straight six engine or whatever came with the vehicle. Drain fluids, rebuild carbs and you should be good for now. Check all mechanical components such as brakes, tires suspension, steering. Keep in mind the popular models as they will be priced higher than others like 32-34 Fords and similar year Chevy's.

Now if you have any mechanical abilities and can weld or fabricate, than you can go down this ultra cheap angle. Begin looking for a vehicle that is popular at swap meets will help you in selecting parts to build your project. Once you choose the type of Rat Rod you want to build, begin looking for the parts that will help you finish your project. Be it wheels, drive-train, or even a set of nostalgic gauges that you've had your eye on, start collecting what you want to see on your car.

Finding a solid, original steel vehicle, is great, but will be costly. Finding something with a little rust is more realistic, and will cost a considerable amount less and will allow you to spend your money on other things for your Rat Rod. Rusty or even rotted floors are good, especially if you plan on channeling your Rat Rod. Just make sure to square the body and doors before you weld in your new panels. The body relies on the floor pan for it's strength, and it's important that it all goes back together correctly.

It's ok to have other people work on your Rat Rod as long as everybody is on the same page. It is tough for a shop to give you a price on doing custom work as it is normally billed out by the hour. But most should be able to give you a range to within a thousand dollars. Have them do the hard work and you can do the finish work. Be sure to research the shop and get some references. Remember, you normally get what you pay for! Make sure building your Rat Rod is a good experience.
